The Huaman sisters from the village of Mahuaypampa, Peru. Their village developed as a stopover between the high-altitude potato fields and the coca fields of the lowland jungle.

Weavers in Mahuaypampa were famous at one time for their small woven mantas, or shawls, with many designs and vivid colors, especially red and blue. Today, the high crowns of their hats might contain a stash of coca leaves.

Elders from the weaving association in the village of Mahuaypampa, Peru, pose in front of the center where they gather to spin and weave and also for companionship. Because so many of the older women are widows, they depend on weaving to help support themselves.
